This charming cottage near the Yorkshire town of Settle is bursting with comfort and character, making it the perfect rural retreat for friends/families. This wonderful home allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the countryside, but is conveniently located only 1.5 miles from the lively market town of Settle with its range of independent shops and eateries and a wealth of heritage. After a busy day exploring, you’ll be relieved to return home for a relaxing soak in the private hot tub. It is one of our two properties at this location.
At one side of Chance’s Well is what is believed to have been a farm hands kitchen, this has a well which is approximately 35 feet deep. There was no first floor, it being open from the ground right up to the roof ridge. This is now the sitting room. What is now the kitchen to Chances Well, was a barn, with a rickety wooden staging, used as a hay loft. There used to be no internal access between these two parts of the building. The second bedroom is in what was once the Grooms room. The master bedroom has an ancient roof truss which we believe to be original to this building and would ask you to take care when walking around this.
It is believed that Monks who were travelling between Fountains Abbey and Furness Abbey used to call at this area and take rest and refreshment from a well maybe the one in Chances Well. When the fire place in Chances Well was unblocked there was a stone in there with some Latin writing on it that we have been told refers to transit and a well, maybe this has something to do with the above journey that the Monks were said to make. The stone has been incorporated in the fireplace to the right hand side as you look at it just above the steps. We would be very appreciative if anyone was able to translate it for us. Would the monks have used Boo Barn to stable their horses? who knows.
